Smoke Impact - Fort Ord Blackline Burn

Today, September 2, 2010, the District detected smoke at ground level in areas along the Hwy 68 corridor, including Corral de Tierra, San Benancio Canyon and Toro Park.  The smoke was caused by the Army conducting their blackline burning on Burn Unit 34 at the former training area of Fort Ord (see http://www.fortordcleanup.com).  At 10:45 a.m., after the District received reports of ground level smoke, the Army immediately ceased ignition and began suppression.  Although elevated levels of smoke persisted for several hours, the afternoon winds should cause the smoke to clear these areas.

The Army has no additional blacklining operations scheduled through and including September 7th.  Weather permitting; operations may be resumed September 8th.

Additional information on this burn, as well as sign-up for direct burn notifications from the Army, can be obtained at www.FortOrdCleanup.com or by calling 1-800-852-9699.
